Frequently asked questions

General questions

Do you provide services in my area?

Check out the service areas on our homepage, or just call us.  For mowing and snow, we stick pretty close to the State College-Bellefonte area.  For trees, we work in Centre and surrounding counties.  For big forestry projects, we will drive up to several hours.

Are estimates free?

Yes.  Get it touch with us, and we'll go over it in more detail.

Do I need to be present for the estimate and/or work?

It's up to you in most cases, but usually not necessary for you to be there.

Do you offer any promotions or discounts?

Sometimes.  Watch our website or ask.

What is Jobber?

Jobber is a software that we use for job management.  When we send a quote or an invoice you can use the links to pay, accept, etc.  It's very intuitive, but if you are ever confused, just give us a call.

When will the work be scheduled?

It depends.  We prioritize work on a few levels.  Life and propery come first.  Then we aim to do everything in a seasonally appropriate manner such as pruning during dormant season.  Finally we are in a business with a lot of complicated logistics that sometimes we are beholden to.  Then first come, first served.  We can be deployed on storm cleanup work in a matter of hours, and some work must wait until the appropriate season.  Most of the time we can be there within a week or two.

What should I do with my dog?

Please clean up poo prior to our arrival.  I like dogs, but would rather not have it on me or my equipment.  Otherwise please have them say hello!

When will the job be invoiced and payment due?

Usually upon completion.  We require deposits for materials for larger projects on a case by case basis.

Do you accept credit card payments?

Yes, all our billing is completed through Jobber and includes options for credit card and ACH payments.

Do you do subcontracting and co-contracting?

Absolutely, sometimes.  We are big believers in teamwork and cooperation.  This is the deal:  we are your one-stop shop for your outside service needs.  We are experts at some things, and we have friends that are experts at their things.  That's our vision of a local, small-biz driven economy.  We can achieve scale through collaboration, not corporation.  We know we are solid, so we do vet our partners thoroughly, because we need to stand by each others' work.  Through teamwork, we achieve our goals, which are to get the job done safely, awesomely, and to keep you happy.

Tree care

Can I cut my neighbor's tree infringing on my property?

Generally, you can cut to the property line, but it depends.  We prefer both parties to be in agreement prior to working on any shared trees, but approach it on a case by case basis.

Can I cut/prune/treat/remove a street tree?

It depends.  In most municipalities, it requires advance approval.  We'll let you know depending on your location.

Will my lawn/landscaping be damaged?

It's basically up to you.  When we develop an estimate we will go over your options and clearly communicate the plan.  Some tree services will just assume you want your lawn undamaged, which inflates the fee.  But, in the case of turf, it's easily and quickly repairable, which can make it easier/cheaper just to fix it.  We communcate these things, because we've been on the frustrated homeowner side ourselves.

Will my property be damaged?

No!  We do everything in our power not to damage property by taking protectionary precautions, and utilizing best practice rigging techniques.

Will you leave a mess for me to clean up?

No!  We pride ourselves on our attention to detail when it comes to clean up.

Are you insured to work on my property?

Yes.  We carry $1 million general liability which is considered best practice.  Please ask if you wish to verify any of our credentials!

Are you certified arborists?

Working on it.  We are a new company in 2024, strongly believe in certification, and intend to ASAP.  In the meantime we follow all ANSI tree care standards just as any ISA certified arborist would.

Are you properly licensed?

Yes.  Our licensing info is listed in the Contact Us section.

Forest Habitat

Why are invasives so bad?

Well, it depends.  Did you know that by some definitions, most of our apple and fruit trees are invasive?  So yeah, there is a bit of a labeling problem with the native plants only attitude.

We try to take a practical approach to forest management.  Everything has a cost and benefit.  We can only control what's in front of us.  Our particular focus is on noxious invasives, attacking the problems that are most obnoxious and have the most significant downsides.  Knotweed, barberry, buckthorn, stiltgrass, multflora rose, kudzu, honeysuckle, phragmites, mile-a-minute, callery pear, bittersweet, etc.  Look, we're not putting this stuff back in the bottle.  It's here to stay.  It is a game of whack-a-mole.  But maybe, just maybe, if every landowner was like you and cared enough to engage in battle with it on their property, maybe we could make significant progress.

At the very least, you can choose not to be the steward of the place that lets it go to crap.  Just like we plant trees for future generations, we do the same with fighting noxious invasives.

What is habitat work?  Is that different than hunting consultants that build food plots?

We are not food plot people.  Food plots certainly have a place in wildlife management!  We can help you locate and plan plots, or refer you to some friends that are experts in that work to help deliver on those projects.

Our speciality is habitat.  Habitat that is healthy, mostly native, and beneficial to a multitude of species just happens to coincide with great deer, bear and turkey hunting.  We are proud participants in the hunting tradition, and we also care about non-game species equally.

Habitat management is an art, and our brains are tuned in and methods proven to work in Pennsylvania.  Don't call in help from the midwest.  Call people that know the woods of PA.  Even if you don't call me, please call someone local.

Do you only do habitat work?

No!  We also offer scouting services, camera and tresspassing surveillance services, road and trail maintenance, and even camp projects.  If it's outside, we can handle it!

How long until I see results?

It depends.  In most cases, multiple years.  Forest work is definitely a delayed gratification deal, and a continous process.  The first step is to conduct a scouting assessment and interview.  Often we bring in a marketable timber expert at that time also.  From there, we come up with a 100% from scratch, custom work plan for your property.  No canned stuff here.

Is my woods going to look like crap when you're done?

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?  Look, we get it, habitat and timber work is often flat out ugly, at least for awhile.  We look at as an investment.  We do value aesthetics too, and take all your concerns into consideration and we clearly communicate where, when, and what we are doing.  It's your property, after all.

Do you offer chemical treatments?

Not presently, but we hope to start later in 2024.  We are big believers in sustainable management practices, and as such, see chemical treaments as a valuable tool, to be used responsibly and judiciously.  While we have much experience on our own property, we are currently pursuing our pesticide applicator certifications to be able to offer this work.

Do you offer prescribed fire treatments?

Also not presently, but we hope to start later in 2024 or 2025.  We are still training on best practices and working through some gatekeepers on the insurance side.
